About the farm
Lower House Cutcombe Farm, nestled on the picturesque Exmoor landscape, has a rich history that dates back to its establishment in 1926 by Mrs. F. Luxton. The farm became renowned for its pedigree Red Devon cattle, officially registering its herd in 1935. In 1970, Mrs. Margaret Elliott (née Luxton) took over the family tradition from her father, continuing the legacy of breeding these distinguished cattle.
Margaret has been an active member of the Devon Cattle Breeders Society since 1970, serving as its president and regularly judging at both county and national shows. Alongside her husband, Donald Elliott, she continues to farm at an impressive 1,000 feet above sea level, maintaining the farm's longstanding reputation for excellence in cattle breeding.
Ruby Red Devon’s
The farm has meticulously preserved the original characteristics of its Ruby Red Devon cows with no saler or polled genetics.
Established in the 1920s, by following traditional breeding practices that emphasize traits like health, strong maternal instincts, and natural adaptability.
No saler or polling.
Raised primarily on grass and silage, the Ruby Red Devon cows thrive in their natural environment, developing the robust, rich qualities for which the breed is known; quiet in temperament, easy fleshing and hardy. Producing marbled beef, they will maintain their condition, milk and fertility in the harshest of conditions, without the need for high levels of supplementary feeding.
This dedication to traditional methods and natural rearing has ensured that the herd remains true to its origins, maintaining the distinctive traits that have made it a resilient and admired breed over the decades.
